When I read the words, “But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord,” I am reminded that as a spouse and a parent, our homes and families come under our leadership. We cannot control whether those under our roof accept Christ, but we can control how we act within those four walls.
Do our actions inside the home honor God? It is often said marriage is like turning a mirror on yourself. Our spouse sees and knows everything about us, and they reflect who we really are. This can be very uplifting, but also humbling. Children are no different. In fact, they are so brutally honest when they are young that it can bring laughter and tears.
I would often ask myself when my child was in the home, “Would my son say that what I am doing is honoring God?” Because I knew if it were not, I would be called out. Or, worse, he would remain silent and think my behavior was acceptable, thus repeating a cycle I might hope to eliminate. Even in our mistakes, though, when our children see us seek forgiveness, these are powerful lessons that honor God.
“But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15 ESV).
