How to Mingle with Other Guests
Updated: Jan 22
Q: I struggle at parties to mingle with other guests. Help!
A: You might be more of an introvert if you are asking this question. Remind yourself there are other people at the party who feel the same way you do. When I attend an event, especially if I do not know anyone, I immediately look for people that are off in a corner not talking with anyone. I make them my mission. I tell myself, “I know how they feel.” I walk over, stick out my hand, and introduce myself. In a nutshell, that is all that is required to mingle. Walk up, put your hand out, introduce yourself. It really is that simple. Then, start with two questions. You both have one thing in common. You somehow have a connection to the hostess. So, ask, “What brings you here tonight?” “How do you know our hostess?” This question will fill a few minutes and likely create other connections from which the two of you can converse. The second full-proof question to ask, “Tell me a little about yourself?” This is an open-ended question, and guess what? Everyone loves to talk about themselves! If you can remember these two inquiries, you will be able to mingle like a pro, AND, you have helped make other guests feel welcome along the way.
Together with you,
