The Trick to Remembering Names

Updated: Jan 22, 2021

Q: If you are new to a group at a party, how do you remember everyone’s name?

A: I admit up front, I struggle in this area. I know how to do this, but I forget to put my own tips into practice. When I do, though, I am successful. The easiest way I have found is to associate the person with something, or someone, familiar in your life. If I am introduced to a person named Kim, I link that person to my sister-in-law. I will say in my brain, “Kim, Kim, Kim. She could be my sister-in-law.” It does not have to make sense but do something to make a connection. The second tip is to use their name in conversation. “Kim, it is so nice to meet you. Tell me, Kim, did you grow up here? Kim, do you have a favorite hobby? Oh, Kim, that was a funny story!” Use their name as many times as you can without sounding silly. These two tips work almost every time!

Together with you,
